[Insert the usual "I'm sorry for not shooting enough pictures and I'll try, but fail, to be better at it from now on" rant here]

I arrived back in Eastchester yesterday at about 3pm, walked into the house through the basement to find a few drops of water in the back corner. I looked out the window to see my neighbor's backyard entirely covered with water, grabbed the camera, and began shooting. I headed back into the house to swap my wide angle for my telephoto, and upon heading back to the backyard to get a closer shot of my neighbor's place, noticed that in the 30 minutes that had passed, the water had risen another 6 inches. I remembered the scenes of flood devastation I'd seen last year, and while I realized that nothing close to that would happen here, I quickly ran to the basement and brought anything worth keeping (my diploma!) up and put it in my room. Suffice to say, we didn't end up too bad. We ended up with about a foot of water and mud, ruining a carpet and 2 couches, causing us to throw out some stuff that won't be missed. I talked to some people who've lived on the block for 40 years, and nobody had seen anything like it.

This shot is taken looking down towards the end of my block. We have a small stream running in our backyard, which during this storm turned into a river, thus necessitating a visit from the US Coast Gard. On the right you can see him making sure that nobody is in the submerged car.

Last night was Yom Kippur, the most important Jewish holiday of the year. It is the day where you're supposed to attone for your sins, and that you greet people saying, "may you be inscribed into the book of life." Or at least, that's what I remember being told way back in Hebrew school.

It is also a day that we remember loved ones who have passed away. This Yahrzeit candle was lit in memory of my mom's father, who died before I was born. When I walked into the house late last night, it was lighting up the kitchen, and will burn for 24 hours.
