Marriage Equality NY

Marriage Equality NY.jpg

Today the New York Supreme Court ruled that the state constitution does not make it illegal for marriage to be defined in such a way as to exclude homos from marrying each other. I'm not a very proud New Yorker today.

I watched tthe oral arguements and was totally impressed by the lawyer, especially Roberta Kaplan. I haven't read the ruling yet, so I don't know what precedent they used, but I don't know how the judges managed to rule the way they did. This really is a step backwards.

From what I read on the new reports, the SC did leave the door open for the legislature to repeal the NY DOMA, opening the door to full and equal marriage for all New Yorkers. As someone who would expects to want to get married in the next decade, I hope they do.

This is a composite picture. The right half was taken at the Marriage Equality NY march across the Brookyn Bridge on June 3rd. The left half was taken at last weekend's Gay Pride Parade in Manhattan. I had not planned on posting either picture, and quite honestly, neither picture is all that impressive alone, but together I think they paint quite a picture of the different people who want to get married, and the joy that public recognition of their relationship would bring to their lives. They deserve it.
