Protesting Ashcroft

Protesting Ashcroft.jpg

Tonight John Ashcroft came to speak to our campus. As could be expected, he was greeted with a rather large protest outside of the student center building. Probably about 500 people showed up to let their opinions be heard.

This was the first protest I've covered, and I generally took two kinds of pitures. Pictures of the protesters with signs, and pictures of the speakers. For this picture, I went into the crowd. My intention was to get the speaker with the flag in the background, and also to get the verticle sign saying "Columbia University" in the shot, since I think it adds some loation detail. The speaker in this picture is Seth Flaxman.

I think this type of picture lends itself very well to black and white, so I processed it that way using the channel mixer, which is a new technique I learned a few days ago. I think this is my first blak and white shot. I noticed that in black and white, crispness and sharpness are even more important than in color. I also think the noise adds a little to the shot. Let me know what you think.
